Thankfully- I come to you without a bomb!
First and foremost, I need to extend a thank you to the great people at VIP Barbell for running an incredible meet. I had a great time. Also to my crew at Deathwish Barbell, my family for coming out to support, and my girlfriend for putting up with me 24/7.
Opener
I opened up with 685, this was a weight that largely in the training cycle didn’t take much struggle to come down with. Unfortunately day of, it took what felt like a lifetime to touch.
I pressed it and got saved by the rack command. Three whites, but had the head judge waited another second it would’ve went over my feet. In all honesty, I’ve never lost a bench forward before and am not sure what I did wrong. They noticed this, and the magnifying glass was over me afterwards.
Second
Took 700- again took surprisingly long to come down. I really am not sure what was causing this, my weight was perfect.
Despite the long eccentric, I pressed it to lock. They made me hold it there for a while, and while I shook like a leaf; I got the rack and got the two whites I needed (my left elbow did most of the shaking, so I assume that’s what netted me the one red). Ultimately, this is what I came here to do and I was ecstatic I managed it.
Third
Given the junior 198 ATWR was 716, I went for 720. I missed this right at the top. I was offered a 4th, and while it felt ok day of; I knew I was on borrowed time with my wrist and didn’t want to chance it. Breaking into the 7s was the goal, and I did what I came to do. Plus- I am only 22. I have a good bit of time left to crest the 716 mark in the future. Very much a “live to lift another day” moment.
Team Chicken Salad put together another good meet.
As for what’s next- I have plans for a quick turnaround for a full power meet in seven or so weeks. Really more of a tune-up meet than anything, I want to get some practice in with my new squat suit before I travel for a meet in October.
On to the next one!
